He has also spent more than 30 years managing more than $ 40 billion in assets. Awesome stuff… and we haven’t even mentioned his star as the ‘Bald Eagle’ in a Magna comic yet. Mobius is clearly an interesting guy, and he’s certainly worth finding out more about. Do exactly that with these things you didn’t know about Mark Mobius.

1. He was a late developer

If you’re concerned that your child seems a bit aimless, don’t be. If they are like Mobius, they will reach the end. Despite his extensive achievements, Mobius was a late developer. Although he had been trained in the arts, he had very little idea of what he wanted to do in the long run. His mother wanted him to be a doctor. He, on the other hand, had no idea. In an attempt to delay the inevitable, he became something of a “professional” mature student. But there is only one time that even the most committed procrastinator can spend in college. In the end, Mobius decided to seek outside help. He visited a counselor who duly asked him to write a list of the things that made him happy. After seeing what he had written, the advisor told Mobius “you have to get into something where you are constantly changing and moving.” So that’s exactly what he did.

2. He trained as an actor

In the 1950s, Mobius seemed to be heading in a very different direction than where it would eventually land. In those days, the investor was studying for a degree in dramatic arts. Although he was not sure what he would do at the end of his studies, his interest in theater, art and music seemed to point towards a life on the stage. His parents, immigrants from Germany and Puerto Rico, did not have the resources to finance Mobius’ college tuition, so he got odd jobs waiting tables, acting, and playing the piano in nightclubs. Working on stage, he began to discover a passion for psychology, something that, unbeknownst to him at the time, would later have a major impact on his investment strategy. As he tells, Mobius believes that many investors fall into the trap of caring too much about balance sheets to realize the people behind them who run the business. He, on the other hand, believes in going out on the field to explore and find out what drives company leaders.

3. Has worked as a talent agent

After finally dropping out of college (or, colleges, to be precise), although he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Boston University and his Ph.D. from MIT, he also managed to do stints at the University of Wisconsin, University of New Mexico, and Kyoto University), Mobius began his career. But just as she’d had a hard time sticking to just one college, it turned out that she’d also have a hard time sticking to just one job. During the first decades of his professional life, he managed to build a resume that included talent agent, communication professor, political consultant, market researcher, and marketer of Snoopy’s products. Eventually, he found some stability as chairman of Mega International Investment Trust Company in Taipei.

4. He started working with Templeton in 1987

In 1987, Sir John Templeton put an end to Mobius’ changing career when he asked him to take over the reins of Templeton Emerging Markets. Mobius would eventually stay with the firm for more than 30 years, becoming one of the most recognized and respected investors in the country in the process. At the end of his tenure, the company managed more than $ 40 billion in assets in 70 different countries.

5. Take two passports

Retirement age may be past, but Mobius has no plans to retire to a life of golf and gardening anytime soon. He also has no plans to withdraw either of his two passports. Although he has a permanent home in Singapore, he spends less time there than on a plane. The perpetual jet set spends most of the year traveling to faraway destinations, always looking for a new market to invest in. During a 2010 interview with City AM, he even joked that the reason he had never been married was because “he would already be divorced from the trips I take.”

6. Believe that the secret to success is to be happy in what you do.

Mobius has sometimes joked that he never goes on vacation because his calling is his hobby, and it is clear that he loves what he does. It’s also clear that her passion for her job is in large part the reason she’s had so much …
