Created by Bombardier, the Q400 goes by many names. The regional twin-engine turboprop aircraft is also known as the De Havilland Canada Dash-8-400. While the name sounds completely technical, there are many things about this aircraft that are unique and interesting. As part of the Q series, the Bombardier Q400 features new interiors and better performance numbers compared to other aircraft in its line. Here are some of the things that set the Q400 apart from the rest.
1. Small plane
The Q400 is designed to accommodate only 76 passengers, and they are all coaches. The plane also accommodates two pilots and two flight attendants. The smaller aircraft size means that the aircraft can fly faster, which means that more flights are offered per day. In fact, since the launch of the Q400, there have been at least 2 more flights per day on the Alaska-Fairbanks route.
2. 2 × 2 seats
For most people, seats are very important on an airplane, regardless of the length of the trip. The Q400 offers only a 2 × 2 seating option, which means you will always have the window or aisle seat. There are no dreaded middle seats to be scared of. The 2 × 2 seats are ideal for single or double travelers or even families of any size.
3. Fly in the cold
This aircraft was designed to fly in the most extreme cold temperatures that can withstand even the worst that Alaska has to offer. They can operate safely even in that scenario, so you can expect the Q400 to be one of the safest aircraft out there. It has been operational for a while and has proven to be efficient and safe since its first flight in 2000.
4. Total fleet
There are a total of 47 Q400 in operation today, flying through the Alaskan skies daily. That’s a large number of planes that can carry passengers back and forth to various destinations in the area. The 47 Q400s are also fairly new in terms of the aviation industry, so a newer interior can be guaranteed to you regardless.
5. Jet faster
The Bombardier Q400 reaches 300 miles faster than any other jet aircraft today. The Q400 can do this because it only needs to reach 25,000 feet to reach its cruising speed. Other aircraft will have to reach their cruising speeds of 33,000 feet or more. While it’s still slower than the 737 at 415 mph, it’s fast enough to do what it’s supposed to do.
6. Peaceful travel
You may notice that the Q400 is much quieter compared to other jets of its size. It is actually quiet both inside and outside the plane. This is because the Q400 is built with the ANVS (Active Noise and Vibration Suppression) system. This system creates vibrations that cancel out the vibrations produced by the engine and propeller blades, making driving quieter.
The Bombardier Q400 is assembled at the Toronto Downsview Airport in Toronto, Canada. From there, the aircraft travels to its destination where its given route begins. Since the Q400 operates primarily in the Canada and Alaska areas, the aircraft doesn’t have to travel very far to operate.
8. Advanced propulsion
This aircraft has twice the usual power of a typical turboprop. The Q400 offers 5,071 shp. Its engine, the PW150A, is considered the most advanced commercial turboprop engine available today. The Q400’s six-blade Dowty propellers are a marvel on their own, delivering more thrust with less noise compared to other models.
9. Advanced cabin
You can expect this given it’s a newer model aircraft, but Bombardier has taken the cabin to the next level with the Q400. This aircraft has the most advanced avionics that Thales can provide. It has 5 LCD screens to better help pilots navigate. It also features a modular design for easy repairs and upgrades.
