The 2002 Honda Accord was the last Accord model to come equipped with a canister-type fuel filter. Honda Accord model cars built after 2002 come equipped with the fuel filter inside the gas tank. As gas circulates through the fuel filter, it traps impurities before sending the clean gas to the fuel injectors. It is recommended that you replace the fuel filter every 30,000 to 40,000 miles.
Step 1: 2002 Honda Accord Fuel Filter
Park the 2002 Honda Accord in a well-ventilated area on a level surface.
Step 2: 2001 Honda Accord Fuel Filter Location
Unscrew the fuel cap from the fuel tank filler neck. Removing the fuel tank cap will relieve most of the gas pressure from the fuel filter and fuel lines.
Open the hood and secure it in place with the locking bar attachment.
Step 4: where is the fuel filter of a honda accord
Locate the black canister fuel filter. The fuel filter in the 2002 Honda Accord is located on the driver’s side, at the rear of the engine, below the brake master cylinder. The fuel filter is a round, black container with a fuel line that exits the top and bottom.
Step 5: fuel filter
Slide the drip pan under the vehicle in the general fuel filter area to catch any gas that spills from the fuel lines and filter.
Loosen and remove the lower fuel line from the fuel filter by holding the fuel filter with one hand and turning the lower fuel filter nut counterclockwise with the 14mm open-end wrench. Once the lower fuel line is loose, unscrew the fuel line with your fingers. Position the lower fuel line towards the drip tray so that gas can drain into it.
Loosen and remove the upper fuel line from the fuel filter by holding the fuel filter with one hand and turning the head of the upper banjo bolt counterclockwise with the 17mm open end wrench. Once the head of the banjo bolt is loose, unscrew the bolt with your fingers. Pull the fuel line off the top of the fuel filter and place the fuel line to drain into the drip pan.
Remove the fuel filter from the fuel filter bracket by unscrewing the two 10mm bolts from the fuel filter clamp with the 10mm open end wrench. Remove the fuel filter from the clamp. Place the used fuel filter in the drip tray.
Slide the new fuel filter into the clamp and screw the upper and lower fuel lines back onto the fuel filter. Tighten both fuel lines with open end wrenches. Recheck the tightness of the fuel lines to prevent the fuel lines from sucking air into the fuel system.
Tighten the clamp around the fuel filter with the 10mm open end wrench. Screw the fuel cap back onto the fuel tank filler neck until the cap clicks.
Turn the ignition to the accessory position for five seconds and then turn it off again. Turn the ignition on and off two more times for five seconds. This process fills the new fuel filter with gas and removes air from the fuel system. Then start the engine and let it run while you check the new fuel filter for gas leaks. Turn off the engine and close the hood. Pull the drip tray out from under the vehicle.
- The Fuel Filter Cartridge for the 2002 Honda Accord is a one size fits all fuel filter. This type of fuel filter cannot be installed backwards due to the two different fuel line connectors on the top and bottom of the fuel filter.
- Do not smoke or open flames around the gas.
- Wear protective goggles when replacing the fuel filter.
