Not only do General Motors employees get a discount on GM vehicles, but the employee’s friends and family can also take advantage of one of two savings programs. Family members of a GM employee have access to the same savings that a GM employee receives. The GM Supplier Discount for Friends is given to friends of GM employees and offers the same discount that GM suppliers get.
Get a sponsorship
To use GM Friends and Family Discounts, you need a GM employee to sponsor you and provide you with an authorization number. The employee needs their date of birth and zip code to obtain an authorization number for their online account on the GM Family First website. Once you have the authorization number, you can email it to print and take it to the dealership to purchase a vehicle.
Find a vehicle
From the GM Family First website, click on the “Build and Price” link to build a vehicle from scratch and view all eligible models. Only new and unused models from the current year and the end of the year are eligible for the discount. Once you have chosen a car, the website offers you the employee discount price and the supplier discount price. It also allows you to search for the closest dealer with that vehicle. You can combine the discount with other sales and promotions GM is offering at the time. GM lists all current promotions on the “Offers” tab of the Family First website.
Visit a dealer
Before you go to the dealership to pick up your car, ask if they participate in the employee discount program. GM does not require that all dealerships offer discounts to the employer. Let the seller know that you will be using a family or friend discount and give them their authorization number. The seller will help you test the models you are interested in, draw up all the documentation, and help you with financing if necessary. By using one of the employee discounts, you can choose any leasing program.
The family discount is open to spouses, children, stepchildren, grandchildren, grandchildren, siblings, parents, stepparents, grandparents, and in-laws. Additionally, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and same-sex domestic partners also qualify. Parties eligible for the friends discount essentially include anyone outside of your family, such as friends, associates and neighbors. GM employees, retirees and surviving spouses can share the family discount, while only current and retired employees can offer the friends discount. The employee can share his employee discount with up to six family members per year.
