Changing your car’s oil regularly will increase its life. One way to save money on this project is to do the work yourself. The process is very simple and can be done on the driveway with a few common tools. The only specialized tool you need is an oil filter wrench. It is used to loosen the oil filter from its housing. Making your own oil filter wrench is easy with an old leather belt.
Clean dirt and oil from the filter housing with a degreaser spray and a rag.
Hold the belt latch on the filter and wrap the leather strap around the filter from right to left.
Pass the leather strap through the latch and tighten around the oil filter.
Pull the strap to remove the filter. Remember the old saying “Lazy Lefty, Tight Right.”
