Why You Should Let Your Motorcycle Warm Up Before Riding
Cars and motorcycles are very similar in the way you are supposed to heat them, but with both cars and motorcycles, people don’t know how to do it correctly. How have you seen it done in the past? Did you just sit the motorcycle on the kickstand, start it, and let it idle until the RPM sounds more controlled? Or have you started it and stepped on the gas to get everything moving?
Don’t be embarrassed if this is what you have done to warm up your motorcycle. Heating your motorcycle improperly is more common than you might think!
Before looking at the proper procedure for warming up the bike, let’s start with why you should warm up the bike in the first place. As you know, inside an engine, there are many parts that move and generate heat. Most of that heat is created by friction, but much of that heat is dissipated with oil and coolant.
Motorcycles, like automobiles, were designed to move and ride. When a motorcycle is in motion, it has air running up the sides and up and around the engine or through the radiator. As the air moves, it cools the engine and prevents unnecessary heat from settling for too long on any particular component.

The same principle should also apply to engine oil. The oil in the engine does not flow completely until the motorcycle is moved down the road.
Warming up your motorcycle before riding means that the oil will operate at its optimum temperature, which in turn means that the motorcycle will be able to naturally cool down much more easily while in motion. Driving without heating it up properly could mean premature failure of parts in different components of the bike.
Warming up your motorcycle doesn’t just mean keeping it running. What it really means is making sure your engine heats up evenly the way it was designed so that it can function properly during a trip.
What could happen if you don’t heat up your motorcycle ?
As I just mentioned, improperly warming up your motorcycle can prevent important fluids from circulating properly around the engine. Oil, in particular, needs to be heated and cycled through the engine .
When a motorcycle is left on the kickstand, the oil cannot flow properly around the engine and cylinders . This can cause excessive heat to build up and this heat can cause some very critical components to wear out and become damaged. . If the seals and rings that are inside the engine become deformed or damaged, the rider will experience some serious functionality issues and could even completely ruin their bike.
But what if you just rev the engine after starting it, making sure the stand is up and the bike is sitting upright? Again, there will not be enough oil in the engine. In this situation, the oil is cold at the bottom of the oil pan. Cold oil does not flow as easily as hot oil.
