The J15 is a boring version of the Nissan J13. The Nissan J15 engine has a deep skirt, cast iron cylinder block with cast iron cylinders, and a cast iron head with tub-like combustion chambers. It has an OHV type valve mechanism and 8 valves (2 per cylinder).
The J15 engine has a 78mm (3.07 inch) cylinder bore and a 77.6mm (3.06 inch) piston stroke with a 8.3: 1 compression ratio. The J15 produced 77 PS (57 kW; 76 HP) horsepower.

The J15 engine crankshaft is a fully counterbalanced three bearing type designed to produce smooth and reliable power. Water is forced through the water jackets to deprive the cylinders of unwanted heat of combustion. The crankshaft is forged special steel with three main bearing journals. To provide balance, four counterweights are provided just in front of the cranks. Main bearing journals and connecting rod journals are hardened and extremely smoothly finished to increase wear resistance.
The pistons are made of cast aluminum alloy. Each piston is equipped with two compression rings and a single oil ring. The piston pin has a fully floating fit to the piston while it is press fit into the small end of the connecting rod. The connecting rod is a special steel forging.

The cylinder head is made of cast steel. Contains bathtub-type combustion chambers. A special sintered alloy valve seat is installed on the exhaust valve. Snap fit.
The camshaft is made of special cast steel and is supported by three main bearings. The cam lobes are cemented and extremely smoothly finished for increased wear resistance. The rocker shaft is made of carbon steel – it is also case hardened for durability. The valve train consists of the camshaft, pushrod, valve rocker, and valve; Movement is transmitted through these four parts in the order listed. The valve spring is double spring type, internal and external.
