The RD28 has a one-piece aluminum cylinder head with a single overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder: one heat resistant special steel intake and one exhaust. The camshaft is driven by a crankshaft timing belt. The intake valves are 39.0 mm (1.54) in diameter and the exhaust valves are 32.0 mm (1.26 in). Early Nissan RD28 engines were equipped with valve shims to adjust valve clearance, later versions used self-adjusting hydraulic tappets.
