You remember ‘Mad Max’, right? Of course it is, or it is very likely that you would not have stopped to read this article. But some of you may not be familiar with the futuristic action movies that began with ‘Mad Max’ in 1979 and starred a young Mel Gibson in the title role. For those who are clueless, here is a quick summary:
In a future world, a crazy motorcyclist kills a policeman. To make a long story short, the guy escapes from custody, and Max (a police officer) is assigned to track him down, which he does, but the climactic chase scene leading to the capture ends with the death of the wanted man. Now the motorcycle gang is angry and they have a revenge against Max, but we will not reveal the main details or screw it up for you. Instead, we’ll tell you that there is a lot of motorcycle action in the movies, which makes the action scenes even more fun than they would be without them. If curiosity is getting the better of you, stream the movie.
Now, let’s get back to the topic: Bicycles. So there are a total of five movies in the franchise (one will be released in 2022) and there are plenty of bikes to choose from when compiling a list of the best. Now, you may have noticed in the movies that you’re not really sure what they ride, especially if you don’t know your motorcycles… but fear not! That’s where we come in. We decided to help by giving you five of the best bikes in this franchise, thus satisfying both your need to know and the need to make a healthy memory, which we encourage. But first, here are the five ‘Mad Max’ movies from the franchise:
• Mad Max (1979)
• Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)
• Mad Max beyond Thunderdome (1985)
• Mad Max: Fury Road (Max played by Tom Hardy) (2015)
• Furiosa (to be released in 2022)
Anyone who’s an action fanatic has seen as many of these movies as possible to date, but they probably have no idea about motorcycles, so let’s get in on it. The following list is compiled from the first four movies only, for obvious reasons, and they are numbered from number five to number one. Read on to discover the five best motorcycles from the Mad Max movies:
5. The Yamaha YZ (and other custom dirt bikes ridden by the Rock Rider gang)
In the movie, the Rock Riders are a bunch of bad guys, just to keep it simple. They were all road bikes anyway, but the bikes they used were nothing more than dirt bikes with a lot of makeup, so to speak. That being said, they were pretty cool, especially for the younger group of Mad Max fans… they were fast maneuverable and had eye-catching designs. We picked these as number five for those two things, plus the fact that anyone who watched ‘Mad Max’ would remember them well.
4. The Kawasaki 900 or 1000 (ridden by ‘Wez’ in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior)
Two bikes were used for the character Wez, who was a member of the Lord Humungus’ Marauders gang, to ride in the movie … the Kawasaki 900 and 1000, but they were dressed the same way. It was fitted with a Craig Vetter fairing, and the overall design of the bike was inspired by the Suzuki Katana, which turned out to be a very new version at the time. The bike was more distinctive than the actual character riding it, which made that character distinguishable to viewers.
3. The black Z1000 (ridden by the character Toecutter in ‘Mad Max’)
The character ‘Toecutter’ was the leader of the outlaw motorcycle gang in the original Mad Max movie, and he also managed to land a different role in ‘Fury Road’, but that’s beside the point. Like Toecutter, actor Hugh Keays-Byrne rode the black Z1000 that fans can easily remember. This particular bike featured a La Parisienne fairing, which distinguishes it from the Goose-ridden bike (discussed soon). A total of 13 bikes were used for this character alone, all of which had to be modified with that particular fairing, bringing good business to La Parisienne.
2. 2007-2008 Yamaha R1 (ridden by Max on ‘Fury Road’)
The fact is, (for those of you who don’t know), Max didn’t ride a motorcycle in the first three movies. In fact, he was driving a Ford Falcon “police car.” But in “Fury Road,” actor Tom Hardy had the pleasure that Mel Gibson did not. To tell the truth, there is speculation about the model of the bike. The action scenes with this particular bike were considered some of the best in the franchise.
