When the factory warranty expires, BMW has a few options its customers can choose from if they want to continue with the manufacturer’s coverage on third-party options. Unlike some automakers that only offer a single extension plan, BMW makes it easy to customize coverage based on the individual needs of the owner and their vehicle.
These are the options you should consider if you want to extend your BMW vehicle coverage.
What’s included: bmw warranty
BMW has a buffet-style warranty approach that is not shared by many other companies outside of many third-party service contract providers. The company offers a few different options for primary coverage.
Warranty period: bmw extended warranty
Most of the BMW Extended Warranty is a replacement warranty that you can purchase even when the original warranty is still in effect. The duration of the warranty is actually calculated based on the time remaining on the original warranty. Customers can choose between one to three years and 75,000 to 100,000 miles. The extension time is in addition to the rest of the factory warranty, so you can get a total of:
- 5 years / 75,000 miles
- 6 years / 75,000 miles
- 7 years / 75,000 miles
- 5 years / 100,000 miles
- 6 years / 100,000 miles
- 7 years / 100,000 miles
Beyond duration, customers can choose one of three plans.
Powertrain Plus: bmw warranty
By extending the basic powertrain warranty from original factory coverage, the Powertrain Plus plan covers a vehicle’s engine, powertrain, transmission, and other important components. This plan is an exclusion guarantee, which means that a good majority of components, such as the steering, heating, and fuel systems, are left out or have limited coverage compared to other parts.
Gold: bmw warranty
Taking a step up from the Powertrain Plus plan, the Gold plan is the middle ground between the original bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties. There’s more coverage for essential components like the engine, steering, brakes, and cooling systems. Unlike the Powertrain Plus plan, there is also limited coverage for interior components.
Platinum: bmw warranty
Unlike the Powertrain Plus plan, the Platinum plan competes with the original bumper-to-bumper warranty. This plan includes the most coverage for most parts of a vehicle. Beyond the powertrain, there is good coverage for specific interior and exterior components, although there are still some limits for the overall interior.
What is NOT included: extend warranty bmw
The list of parts not covered by the extended warranty depends on the specific plan you choose.
Non-essential components: bmw extended warranty
Almost all extended warranty plans offer basic or limited coverage for the components most important to keeping a vehicle running, such as the engine and transmission. This is not the case with parts and systems that are not required.
General interior items such as seat and dash materials are primarily excluded from lower warranty plans. Exterior accessories like mirrors and bumpers also tend to fall out of coverage.
Contingencies: bmw guarantees
Beyond factory defects, extended warranty plans do not cover problems due to accidental or incidental issues. This means that most of the money-saving value of the warranty extension will come when there are problems created by poor workmanship or materials at the factory.
The good: bmw warranty extension
When it comes to extended factory warranties, BMW is near the top for its level of customization. Most automakers only offer a single warranty option, so the company’s list of plans and length of coverage are more attractive to anyone wanting to have a custom extended warranty that is unique to their own vehicle. .
Plans, in particular, make it easy to find something specific for a vehicle. Newer vehicles can benefit from the basic Powertrain Plus, while older or more problematic vehicles can use the extensive Gold or Platinum warranties.
The company goes one step further with additional benefits that customers can add to the warranty. The Ultimate Care and Ultimate Care + programs, for example, can cover the costs of all factory-recommended maintenance services to keep your vehicle in good condition.
