Born Howard Irvine Coones but known to all as ‘Rusty’, this HAMC member stands 6 feet 5 inches tall and is as imposing in real life as he looks on screen. His real life story is a bit more colorful than his real life character, but we’ll talk about that later. His participation in the show came when Charlie Hunnam, the star of SoA He visited his motorcycle shop, Illusion, to purchase a couple additional motorcycles for the show, which were later auctioned for charity.

However, Coones is believed to have met Sutter earlier, at a Hells Angels MC toy race in the San Fernando Valley. Later, Kurt Sutter, the creator of the show, contacted Coones, not only to have Coones customize a motorcycle for him, but also to bring him on the show as a cast member and technical advisor.

The real life story of Rusty Coones

via LATimes

Rusty Coones was not only a member of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, but he was the president of two HAMC chapters: first the San Fernando Valley and then the Orange County chapter, a chapter he founded. So he’s almost HAMC royalty. His real life story is also accompanied by a lot of drama and tragedy. In the 1980s, his heroin-addicted brother overdosed and, in response, opened a rehab center in California.

It later closed in 1995 due to a change in government subsidies that reduced profits and made operation impossible. In the late 1980s, he also met his wife, Katherine Coones, and went on to have a son and daughter with her. This petite blonde has stayed with Rusty Coones through thick and thin.

Like a true HAMC member, the Coones himself has been in prison twice. The first time he got into drugs. In 1999, he bought Illusion Motorsports and was trying to make something of it by customizing motorcycles, only to go back to prison on drug conspiracy charges, distributing a chemical used to make methamphetamine.

This time, he came in for six years, and his wife, Katherine, kept Illusion Motorsports running for Rusty to have something to do when he returned. When he returned, the economy was failing and Illusion was not doing so well. That’s when Coones met Charlie Hunnam and Kurt Sutter, and the rest is history.
