Description of the International Baccalaureate
The International Abitur (IB), also known as Diploma program (PD), is a pre-university course for students aged 16-19, demanding and years two years term Taught in three languages: English, French and Spanish.
It is a high quality international educational program that was founded in 1968 by the International Baccalaureate Organization and united in different centers on the five continents.
This training will help you develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to adapt to a particularly globalized world.
Structure of the International Baccalaureate
The diploma program (DP) consists of a common core group and six subject groups.
The common trunk, aims to broaden the educational experience and challenges you to apply your knowledge and skills. Its components are:
- Theory of knowledge: It reflects the nature of knowledge and the way we know what we say we know.
- monograph: Independent research is carried out, culminating in an essay of 4,000 words.
- Creativity, Action and Service: A project on these three concepts has been completed.
In addition to the common trunk there is six subject groups, each group consists of different courses:
- Linguistics and literary studies
- Language acquisition
- Individuals and societies
Which subjects do I have to take?
You have to choose a course from each of the first five subject groups and a humanities subject or a second subject from groups 1 to 5.
You will take some higher-level subjects (240 hours) and others of the intermediate level (150 hours). The difference between the levels is in their scope, but both are rated on the same criteria.
You must take at least three subjects (a maximum of four) at the higher level and the rest at the intermediate level.
International Baccalaureate Assessment
For each of the six subjects, the students receive a grade from 1 to 7, plus the grades for the common core, which can range from 0 to 3 points.
At the end of the International Baccalaureate, the grades of all subjects in both courses are added up. In order to receive the diploma, in addition to passing the subjects of the common core, at least 24 points are required.
Leaving the International Baccalaureate
After completing the diploma program, you will have access to the various higher education courses at universities around the world.
