characteristics, price and technical sheet

24 mayo, 2021

Apparently Samsung has had enough with the leaks of Samsung Galaxy A8 and A8 + and has finally decided to present them in society. It is official, the trio A3, A5 and A8 withdraw to give way to the new fashion duo: A8 and A8 +. Both models take the year as their last name, and it is that there was already a Galaxy A8 in 2015.

The most obvious change is obvious: it arrives the expanded screen to Samsung’s mid-range, but other new features include the dual front camera. The fingerprint reader goes to the rear and the interior is updated, with more RAM and a more powerful brain. Of course, the largest version, the A8 + probably stay in asia.

Big screen, same design

A mere glance will help us see that the most obvious apparent change is on the screen. The rest of the materials and general design is quite similar, if we ignore the side effects of the expanded screen such as the disappearance of the physical home button and the moving of fingerprint reader to the rear.

TO 5 New A8 (2018) on the left, and the A5 (2017) on the right

The overall design is a bit more square, with the edges less rounded and the front is black regardless of the color of the mobile. For the rest, the rear maintains the same composition although the fingerprint reader is located under the camera, whose lens is more prominent than in the previous generation.

I would not dare to say that the side edges have been reduced, since they look more or less the same, but what has changed is the screen, which adopts the latest fashion of round its corners. Another subtle but noticeable change is in the volume buttons, which have been re-merged after two separate generations.

The double camera is for taking selfies

A82018

The other great novelty of the Galaxy A8 and A8 + is in its camera. The double camera comes to the A series, although it does so on the front and not on the back. The 16MP sensor is combined with another 8MP sensor, with F1.9 aperture to give you more options for your selfies, with portrait mode Y Live focus, a function with which you can adjust how much bokeh you want in the background.

The rear camera maintains the 16 megapixels of the previous generation, but now with a F1.7 aperture. We can therefore expect better performance in photos with insufficient lighting and at night.

Two instead of three

Galaxy A8 A8 Plus

A3, A5 and A7 have become A8 and A8 +. Arguably the evolution of the A5 is the A8 and that of the A7 is the A8 + (and this is indicated by their model names), so we can say that there is no place for phones as small as the A3 in 2018, not even with the screen expanded.

How is the A8 different from the A8 +? As you could see from the spec table, not by much. The A8 + screen is bigger, it has a bigger battery, it is bigger and there is the version with 6 GB of RAM. Otherwise, it is the same screen resolution and the storage remains the same.

The thickness is practically the same in both, 8.4 mm for the A8 and 8.3 mm for the A8 +, a bit chunkier than the 2017 A’s, which were at 7.9 mm, which in turn were fatter than the 2016 ones (7, 3mm), which were from the originals (6.7mm). Can we say that the fashion of making mobile phones ever thinner has passed?

Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8 + versions and prices

With the Galaxy A8 and A8 + you will have more options than ever, because until now the A series was sold with fixed specifications for each model. This changes, and we have the A8 (2018) with versions of 32 and 64 GB of storage, and the A8 + also with 4 and 6 GB RAM versions.

Regarding the colors, we will have four options, the same as on previous occasions: black, orchid gray, gold and blue, which will not reach Europe.

You can get one very soon, as the availability is set for early January. Everything indicates that the larger version with more RAM, the A8 +, will not arrive in Europe, just as the Galaxy A7 did not.

Regarding the price, we do not have it confirmed. If it helps, the 2017 A5 was launched at a price of 429 euros, and it is not expected that this figure will be reduced. Rumor has it that the price of the A8 (2018) will be 499 euros and that the A8 + (2018) will go up to 599 euros.

Update 15/01: the Samsung Galaxy A8 is now available in Spain with Movistar and Vodafone from 480 euros, although the free price is 499 euros.
