How to configure and control bulbs compatible with Google Assistant

The arrival of smart assistants has also meant for many people the arrival of the connected home, the first thing that we usually domotize in our house is lighting, installing smart bulbs to be controlled with our voice through the Google Assistant of our mobile or smart speakers and screens.

In the market we find a wide variety of smart bulbs compatible with Google Assistant such as Philips HUE, Ikea Trådfri, TP-Link or Xiaomi Yeelight, being very easy to link with Google Assistant to be controlled by voice from our mobile or Google Home speaker. Link your bulbs to Google Assistant and Google Home

The first thing we have to do is configure the bulbs according to the manufacturer’s instructions through its official application and Hub if you need it to be able to connect your bulb to our WiFi network.

Once the light bulb is configured, we just have to link it to the Google Assistant from the Google application or the application Google Home.

To link the bulbs from Google Home we have to do these steps:

  1. Open the app Google Home.
  2. Click on the icon + in the upper left.
  3. Tap on “Configure device”.
  4. Tap on “Have you configured any devices?”.
  5. Look for the brand of the manufacturer of your bulbs.
  6. Log in to the manufacturer’s website to link their service in Google Assistant.

Home Control

Another way to link the bulbs is directly from Google Assistant:

  1. Open the Google Assistant.
  2. Tap on To explore.
  3. Click on your profile icon.
  4. Tap on “Settings”.
  5. Click on the tab “Assistant”.
  6. Tap on “House control”.
  7. Look for the manufacturer’s brand of your bulbs
  8. Sign in with the manufacturer’s account to link their service in Google Assistant.

The next step is to assign which room each bulb is in and optionally give each one a name so that later it is easier to know which bulb is each lamp and where it is, and also when controlling them. Also the Google Assistant will recognize the scenes we have created from the manufacturer’s app.

How to control the light with the Google Assistant

Once the bulbs have been linked with the Google Assistant we can now use their voice commands to control the lights in our house:

  • Turn a light on or off: “Turn on / off the light”, “Turn on / off [bombilla] from [habitación] from [habitación]”,” Turn on / off [bombilla]”,” Turn on / off [bombilla] from [habitación].

  • Lower the intensity of a light: “Lower the intensity of [bombilla]”,” Lower the brightness of [bombilla]”,” Dim [bombilla]”,” Lower the brightness of [bombilla] to the maximum “,” Attenuates [bombilla] to the maximum “.

  • Turn up the intensity of a light: “Increase the intensity of [bombilla]”,” Raise the brightness of [bombilla]”,” Raise the brightness of [bombilla] to the maximum “.

How to control the light with the Google Home app

If we do not want to use our voice to control the lights or the manufacturer’s application, we can use the application Google Home. This application has shortcuts to turn on and off all the lights in the house or in a specific room, control the brightness and color of the bulbs, and enter their settings to rename them and assign them a room.

If we have more than one bulb in the same room, Google Home groups them together, and to manually control them individually we have to touch “X lights” to access the list of bulbs. By tapping on the name of a light bulb we enter its complete control.
