What forms of deer are currently available in Pokémon Go?

Exactly which form of Deerling you can find in the wild was changed at the beginning of the Pokémon Go Celebration Season, on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, to ensure that Deerling reflects which season you are currently experiencing.

Since the northern and southern hemispheres experience the seasons at a different time, this means that there are currently two different deer shapes available in Pokémon Go. Although you would have to take a significant trip to capture both!

Coaches in the northern hemisphere can catch winter deer, while those in the southern hemisphere can find summer deer.

The Deerling and Sawsbuck forms explained in Pokémon Go

Deerling and Sawsbuck are unique in the Pokémon universe, as they are the only Pokémon that have an appearance that changes with the seasons. This means that both Pokémon have four unique forms: spring, summer, fall, and winter.

This design choice stems from how the games in which both Pokémon, Pokémon Black and White, debuted, had a seasonal mechanic; each month it would go through a new season, allowing players to experience different weather conditions and catch different Pokémon.

Deerling and Sawsbuck’s appearance would alter along with this seasonal change both in nature and within their group. This change, however, is purely cosmetic, as both Pokémon retain their moveset and type: normal and grass-type.

With the arrival of Gen 6, Deerling and Sawsbuck would be permanently stuck in their spring forms, as the seasonal mechanic was abandoned.

However, thanks to the fact that Pokémon Go is linked to the seasons of the real world, we will be able to capture all four forms of both Pokémon throughout the year.

Below you can find each of the seasonal shapes for Deerling and Sawsbuck:
