Windows 10, like any other computer, usually gives you the ability to create multiple user accounts. With this, when you share your PC with your family members or roommates, each one can have their own account with their applications and settings, so that there are no quarrels about how many useless apps one installs or how much the other gets on the desktop.
But you don’t always have to want all created accounts to be seen. Sometimes it is because there are too many, because you want to hide the administrator ones, or you simply see it unnecessary to appear those of users who connect remotely. For those cases, there is a way to hide user accounts on Windows 10.
But before we start we have to make a warning. The process requires changing parameters in Windows registry, something for which we must be extremely careful if we do not want to damage the operating system. Therefore, although the method itself is simple, if you are not sure what you are doing, it will be better not to touch anything.
You also have to keep in mind that once the changes are made you will not be able to access this user locally again. It will disappear from the start system options, so you will not be able to click on the user to start the system with him. It is something reversible, but you have to take into account to decide to what extent you need to do it.
WINDOWS 10: 9 VERY USEFUL and LITTLE KNOWN TRICKS
First access the user account manager
The first step you have to take is to know exactly what the username of the account you want to hide is. It is not the same as it appears when you log in. For example, my account may have a full name that is Yúbal FM, but the real name of the user in the registry can be something else, such as genbeta. Therefore, first you must access the user account manager.
There are two ways to access it, through Cortana or with the Windows launcher that appears when you press the keys Windows + R. In either case you will have to write the word netplwiz To access. Once inside, you must select the user you want to hide later and click on Properties.
The name that you have to take into account is the one that appears in the field Username. That is the one that will have to be looked for later in the registry editor, so you must make sure that write it down somewhere or memorize it before moving on.
Editing the system registry
Once you write down this name, it is time to enter the matter and access Registry Editor. To do it you just have to write the word regedit in the Cortana search bar or in the program execution window that you will access by pressing Windows + R. The registry is shown with two sections, but they are the folders on the left side that you have to navigate.
In them, you must open the folder HKEYLOCALMACHINE, and go into SOFTWARE, Microsoft, Windows NT Y CurrentVersion until you reach a folder called Winlogon. Now you will have to create new keys in the registry, something that you can do with a right click on the blank space on the right, and choosing the options New -> Password.
The first new key or folder that you have to create will have to be inside Winlogon, and it has to be called SpecialAccounts. Then you will enter it, and inside you will have to create another new key called UserList. Once everything is done, you have to make sure that the resulting structure is Winlogon SpecialAccounts UserList.
Hiding each user one by one
As the name suggests UserList, inside this folder you can add a list with the users you have created on our PC to determine which of them you want to hide. You do not have to add them all, since those that do not appear will simply stay as they are, while those that appear you can configure them as visible or invisible.
Therefore, the next step is to create the users. To do this, what you have to do is right-click again on the right side of the registry, and within the option New choose DWORD value (32-bit). If it does not let you give this value a name, you will have to right click on it to choose the option to change the name.
The name of this new value has to be exactly the same as the username you want to hide. Hence, before it was so important to know the real username. Once everything is done, you will have to right click on the username you have created, and choose the option Edit Value.
When editing the value, the key field that you have to take into account is that of Value information. If you put a 0 the user will stop appearing in the login, which as I have explained before will make it impossible for anyone to use it locally, although it can continue to be used when accessing remotely.
If over time you realize that you need a username that you have hidden to reappear, all you have to do is return to the UserList from the system registry, re-edit the value and replace 0 with 1. You will be able to add all the users you need and hide them and make them visible again as many times as you want.
