Surely you have ever noticed that when you log into a website or platform through Google Chrome, the browser asks you if you want me to remember the password. This is called Google Smart Lock and it is basically a vault with all your credentials safely stored in your Google account.
Google Smart Lock is not an exclusive service for PCs, but syncs with Android devices in which you have logged in with that account. In short, if you save a password in Google Chrome on your PC, that password will be synchronized with your mobile so that you can use it in apps and websites. This means that you can access and manage all your credentials directly from your mobile.
How to manage your passwords on Android
Google has its own dedicated section in the settings of all Android phones that are sold outside of China. In that section is everything related to Android Auto, connected applications, Google Pay, Google Assistant and, of course, the passwords. The route is as follows:
- Open “Settings”.
- Scroll down and search for “Google”.
- In this new window, go all the way down and look for “Smart Lock for passwords”.
- There you will see a section called “Saved Passwords” that will redirect you to this link.
Specifically, this link takes us to the password vault of which we spoke before. In it you can see each and every one of the websites whose credentials you have saved. Click on the one you want to manage. Surely you have to log in to your google account again, so enter the password when prompted.
Once inside you can see the email and password, copy both data to the clipboard, edit them or delete the entry so that Google does not remember it. What is the advantage of having the account saved in Smart Lock? That Google can log into various services for you.
Netflix or Spotify, for example, are two of them. If you use Netflix or Spotify in Google Chrome for PC and save the password, when you download the apps on Android, Google Smart Lock will show you a blue tab asking if you want to log in with those credentials.
Now, if you don’t want Google to save your passwords, you just have to go to “Settings”> “Google”> “Smart Lock for passwords” and uncheck the “Smart Lock for passwords” box. That way, the next time you log into a website or app, you won’t be asked if you want to save the credentials. That can be useful if, for example, you prefer to use an alternative password manager.
