26 mayo, 2021

During the 24 hours, 7 days a week, Old Time Radio broadcasts a varied radio programming divided by channels: future, action, mystery, western and comedy. All are radio shows of yesteryear – in English, it should be noted – hosted on the Internet Archive.

This radio on-line it is completely free, open source, released under license from MIT and with source code available on GitHub.

The creator knew that the Internet Archive, in addition to infinite material related to the Internet, stored thousands of classic radio programs from the 30s, 40s and 50s, so he decided to create an online radio that would allow them to be listened to linearly.

“The commercials are sometimes more entertaining than the shows themselves, since they take up a lot of your time”

As explained on GitHub, has built Old Time Radio without hosting any files itself. The web, whose server-side components are written in Node.js, reads a configuration file that contains a list of radio shows that will be broadcast. Next, an Internet File API comes into play to be able to access the programs and the part of the configuration file that has the list of available channels. Thus, the playlists of each one are generated.

And not only are the classic radio programs that this station interesting on-line emits, but also the advertising that contains. “The commercials are sometimes more entertaining than the shows themselves, since they occupy a large part of their time,” acknowledges the creator.
