review with features, price and specifications

26 mayo, 2021

Last June, Xiaomi presented two new models within its most basic range: the Xiaomi Redmi 6 and the Xiaomi Redmi 6A. Both terminals, which went on sale in Spain a couple of months later, are committed to a low price and humble benefits, among which we find a 5.45-inch HD + screen and a 5-megapixel front camera.

Like its older brother, the Redmi 6, the Xiaomi Redmi 6A has already passed through our test bench so that we can see first-hand how it performs on a day-to-day basis a terminal that the company itself does not hesitate to qualify as “the king of the low range”.

Design: sober, light and resistant

Xiaomi Redmi 6a 06

If there is something that characterizes the Redmi 6A, it is its simple, ergonomic and quite light design, which does not differ too much from other terminals of the brand. Being an entry-level model, it is understandable that Xiaomi has opted for the polycarbonate for the back of the Redmi 6A. Although this plastic casing does not give it the premium look of metal and glass, it does have obvious advantages over other materials (beyond cost savings, obviously).

Among those virtues, we mainly find a lower weight and greater resistance to bumps and scratches. It also heats up (and cools down) a lot less, feels nice to the touch, and of course prevent the dreaded footprints from appearing.

What lacks fingerprint reader (something that is quite striking at this point), on the back of the Redmi 6A we only find two elements: the camera, which protrudes slightly in the upper left corner, and the speaker in the lower area.

The location of the latter is surprising, and not exactly for the better: it forces the sound to rise and prevents having the mobile face up if we want to hear the sound. The volume, by the way, is not exactly high, but we cannot say that the Redmi 6A fails in the sound section, but quite the opposite: it offers optimum quality audio for a terminal in this range.

On the right side, we find the power / lock and volume buttons, while on the left, we have the trays for the cards: a double one for a nanoSIM and a microSD, and a single one for another nanoSIM (Indeed, it offers dual SIM function). The lower frame is reserved for the microphone and the microUSB connector (yes, it lacks USB-C), and the upper frame is where the headphone jack connector is located next to the noise canceling microphone.

The front is almost entirely occupied by the 5.45-inch screen. Here, we see some pretty tight frames on the sides, although not so much at the top and bottom. In fact, as we see in the following table, it cannot be said that the Redmi 6A stands out precisely because of the use of the front.

In short, we have a terminal that is comfortable in the hand and that it has a thickness and a weight in the line of other phones with the same screen size. Its plastic casing (metallic gray in our case) makes it clear that we are dealing with an entry-level model, but this does not mean that it has bad finishes; and it must be recognized that it supports scratches and dirt in general with integrity.

Display: correct display, no more

Xiaomi Redmi 6a 03

We now turn to talking about the screen. The Xiaomi Redmi 6A has a 5.45-inch panel with HD + resolution (1,440×720 pixels), a density of 295 pixels per inch and an 18: 9 aspect ratio. Leaving aside the screen / front ratio that, as we have said, seems somewhat scarce, we miss the FullHD resolution, although of course, with it the battery would have suffered and, probably, the processor, already quite fair. .

However, the display quality offered by the Redmi 6A is sufficient for day to day, with the possibility to modify color and contrast according to our preferences, something that is appreciated. If we activate the automatic brightness, it adapts to changes in light quite quickly, but remains below the desirable brightness. In any case, we have shortcuts from the home screen to adjust it to our liking.

If we look at the screen from different angles, we perceive some darkening, but nothing that hinders daily use. Regarding its use outdoors, a little more shine would have been desirable, but even in direct sunlight, the phone can be used, something not very common in terminals of this price range.

Xiaomi Redmi 6a 04

On the other hand, and in addition to the aforementioned option to adapt the color and contrast, the Redmi 6A offers us some additional settings that deserve a special mention, such as the Reading mode (which makes the colors warmer so that the eyes are relax) and the possibility of wake up the screen by picking up the phone or with a double tap about her. There is also no lack of gesture navigation and automatic shutdown for a period of inactivity that varies between 15 seconds and 10 minutes.

Screen 2

In summary, we have a screen that, although it falls short of resolution, provides a good wearing experience, including a correct tactile response. In addition, we must thank Xiaomi for the amount of adjustments it offers, very unusual in the input range.

Performance: a Mediatek quad-core is poor

Xiaomi Redmi 6a 11

For the Redmi 6A, Xiaomi has opted for MediaTek and its Helio A22 chip, a processor with a 12 nm architecture and four A53 cores that runs at 2GHz. In the model we have analyzed, they accompany you 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, which a priori is scarce, but can be expanded with a microSD card up to 256GB.

As we always say in these cases, we must bear in mind that we are facing an entry-level phone whose price is around 100 euros. Starting from that base, we have an acceptable performance in most daily tasks, moving through the menus and opening and closing applications. In multitasking it does not experience too many difficulties, although the camera application has shown slow reaction on some occasions.

We have appreciated certain lags and some frame drops, but nothing that is not within reason for a mobile of these characteristics

It is also true that we have appreciated certain lags and some frame drops, as well as some jumps and momentary stops when scrolling while browsing the Internet or on social networks, such as Twitter and Instagram. All this is within reason, although it could have been solved putting in some more gig of RAM or opting for an eight-core processor. But of course, in that case, we would not be talking about the Redmi 6A, but about its brother, the Redmi 6.

Xiaomi Redmi 6a 05

As for its performance when playing, it is reasonable in simple titles, with very little load, but as soon as they are somewhat demanding (let’s not say too much), unexpected closures appear and the shortcomings come to light both the processor and the RAM and the GPU. In any case, we repeat that it is not a mobile designed to squeeze it with that type of games, so that mediocre performance falls within what is expected.

As we always do in each analysis, we have subjected the Redmi 6A to the performance tests or benchmarks by AnTuTu, Geekbench and 3D Mark. We leave the results below in a shared table with other similar models on the market:

HUAWEI Y6 2018

Helio A22 (MT6762M)

We therefore have a acceptable performance for an entry-level model, much higher than that offered by other terminals with a quad-core processor and 2 GB of RAM. Despite everything, and this is already a personal opinion, it would have been preferable to raise the price a few euros if that meant including a few more gigabytes of RAM or a better processor. With this, the Redmi 6A would develop smoothly and allow us to enjoy more games.

Software: MIUI, for better or for worse

Xiaomi Software

The Xiaomi Redmi 6A comes standard with version 8.1.0 of Android and MIUI 9, but as soon as we turn it on, it proposes the update to MIUI 10. We have, therefore, MIUI 10 on Android 8.1 Oreo What does this translate into? Very simple: if you like to enjoy an Android experience as clean and pure as possible, you will be disappointed: MIUI is one of the layers that prints the greatest personality to the operating system. It is true that it does not negatively affect the operation, but it has many own apps installed and it has a visual aspect that everyone does not like equally.

We thoroughly compare the layers of Android customization: this is the software of Samsung, Huawei, LG, Xiaomi, Google and more

Beyond the folder that includes all Google applications (Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Drive, Duo, Play Music, Play Video, etc.), we find numerous proprietary tools and applications. Some are very useful, such as the system cleaner, the file manager, the recorder or the scanner, but others are designed for the most fans or followers of the Chinese brand, such as the own app store, the forum or the Mi community. (These last two can be uninstalled, just like the Facebook app, which is also pre-installed).

Total, we have a little more than 24 GB free of the 32 GB of internal storage that this phone offers. However, as we say, it is possible to uninstall part of the bloatware that comes with startup. What we cannot ignore are the number of duplicate apps that MIUI includes and that cannot be eliminated: in addition to the aforementioned app store, it has …
