The one who warns is not a traitor, and Apple was not going to be less. On the first of this month, Apple TV +, Apple’s series and movies service, arrived. This service has been released with original content (quite scarce), waiting for it to increase little by little.
Since the day of its launch, we have been able to test Apple TV +, thus being able to talk about its lights and shadows. In the midst of the Netflix era, HBO and other alternatives, they have to put all the meat on the grill to become a competitive rival. Will Apple’s proposal be?
This is how Apple TV + works
Apple TV + is a series and movies service from Apple, with a monthly subscription. In Spain, it costs 4.99, has a trial period of seven days, and it’s free for one year if you have bought an Apple device this 2019. Thus, when accessing Apple TV + we access Apple’s own catalog, something that, on paper, sounds pretty good. The main problem we find with Apple TV + is that is included within the Apple TV app, within the channels, without clarifying too much what it is (although, at least, it has its own category in the App).
The main problem with Apple TV + is that it is not highlighted in the application. It mixes with the rest of the paid content, which can be confusing
In other words, when opening the Apple TV application, either on a computer, iPad or iPhone, we will find Apple TV + titles mixed by interface with other Apple TV titles, something that is not the same service. The problem here is that Apple TV is the same name for two things. One, Apple’s physical device to send content to television, and another, that of an application that allows us to play in a single app different subscription services, rent, purchase, etc.
At least you have the deference to clarify with a small icon in the lower right corner of the titles, which ones belong to Apple TV + and which ones do not. Of this icon, by the way, we did not even realize when we used the mobile app (to emphasize that it was on a mobile, due to the size of its panel) for the first time, and it is likely that we are not the only ones who ignore them. Thus, in the ‘what to see’ section, the titles that we can access through Apple TV + subscription mingle with paid Apple TV titles, an integration not very good in our experience.
Titles and Playback Experience
Beyond the small mess that we found when finding all the titles mixed with each other, we find that Apple TV + has hit the streets with eight titles. That is to say, this first month, unless enough titles begin to be included relatively quickly, we will be paying 4.99 euros for a catalog of 8 series, a little more than half a euro to see each one of them.
- The Morning Show
- For all mankind
- Queen of elephants
- The ghostwriter
- Snoopy in space
The interface is simple and complete, showing us the options for playing the episode, downloading, adding to ‘Next’, as well as information related to the resolution and audio quality of the same.
Add that, in our case, we have been able to send the content to a Samsung Smart TV, but it has not been possible to send this with a Chromecast, since it does not appear in the list of devices. Clarify that Apple TV + is compatible with Fire Stick and Smart TVs from brands such as LG, Sony, or Samsung, since they are compatible with the Apple TV app.
As for the reproduction of the content, it goes without saying that it is reproduced in 4K without any type of cut, as long as the connection accompanies. In fact, as we read in Flatpanels, the bitrate is higher than Netflix although, as we anticipated, we have not noticed an extra quality, everything looks like a charm, as expected.
An ambitious proposal that needs to improve
Apple TV + comes from the hand of own productions and the ambition to rival streaming giants. However, for this you need, first of all, be more differentiated within the Apple TV + application Its current rivals have their own applications, if you want to watch Netflix, you download Netflix, and so on with the rest.
The Apple TV + catalog will increase over time, but today it is quite scarce, and it is worth considering whether it is worth investing in the service at its launch
If you want to see Apple TV +, you have to look for it as another stronghold within Apple TV, or look for one of its titles in the ‘what to see’ section. Regarding the content, it is not appropriate to criticize that it is scarce, since it is a matter of time before more is added. What if possible is to reflect on whether, to date, it is worth it or not to pay 4.99 euros to have access to eight titles, counting the competition with thousands of them.
