who can and who can’t

26 mayo, 2021

For many users that an Android device has a reader microSD cards is a determining factor for their purchase, since they think they will be able to expand your memory to install more applications and games in the terminal, but that does not have to be the case.

That an Android device has a microSD card reader does not mean that the applications can be moved to that external storage. And no, Android has not limited the use of microSD cards, it all depends on how the manufacturer manages the storage on their devices.

Surely many of you have encountered this problem, put a microSD in your device to move applications to the SD card and see that it is not possible, a problem unfortunately common in many devices regardless of the manufacturer, which they do not allow to move the applications to the SD, they only allow you to move the multimedia files.

Applications on the SD card

What is this problem due to? Well it is because Android only allows apps to be moved to primary external storage, and not all devices are about the microSD card. Since Android 4.0, in many devices this primary external storage is a dynamic partition in the internal memory, with the microSD card being the secondary external storage, currently not supported for moving apps but if supported so that applications can save their own files from Android 4.4 (KitKat).

Android microSD

What many manufacturers do so that applications can be moved to the external memory card is make the microSD the primary external storage and delete that dynamic partition from the internal memory, either automatically or by asking the user in the configuration what type of storage they want as the default.

Android microSD

For this reason there are devices in which the applications can be moved to the microSD and others in which they cannot. It all depends on the memory management implemented by the manufacturer and not on the Android version, as we saw a few months ago Android 4.4 did not limit the use of SD cards.

Be careful, keep in mind that Android does not allow all applications to be moved to the microSD as they may stop working properly. Google recommends to developers that applications that use background services, manage alarms, have widgets, or are a keyboard or animated wallpapers cannot be moved to the external card.

On which devices can the applications be moved to the SD card?

The same manufacturer has models in which if you can move the applications on the SD card and other models in which you cannot, they do not follow the same standard for all their devices. Therefore, to know before buying an Android device if we can move its applications to the microSD without problems, we will have to inform ourselves so as not to be surprised.
