If you are one of those who are not enough with our monthly recommendations of the perfect wallpaper and you want to give an even more interesting touch to your desktop, you may be interested in trying AutoWall, a small application for set live wallpapers.
AutoWall is a free and open source tool that allows you to convert GIFs or videos into live wallpapers for Windows 10. It is a portable application, so it does not need installation and is extremely easy to use.
A background video if you have the resources for it
AutoWall uses other projects such as the Weebp open spurce engine and the MPV player to play the videos in the background. The program supports AVI, MP4, MOV and GIF formats, although its creator recommends using GIFs whenever you can to consume fewer resources.
All you have to do is download the ZIP file hosted on GitHub, extract it to the folder of your choice on your disk, and run AutoWall.exe. The interface is a tiny window from which you can simply choose the file you want to use as the background.
To apply it, you just have to click on “Apply”, and for the background to appear whenever you start Windows 10, you must check the “Set on windows startup” box. You can change the background whenever you want, or you can press “Reset” to remove the current animated background.
The consumption of AutoWall resources will depend on the type of file you choose, if you use a GIF it will be less, and if you use a video, the application player will consume no more than 100 MB of RAM, and between 5 and 10% of CPU and GPU, although this varies a lot and fluctuates. If you have a modest computer, this is not a very good idea to use, but if that is not a problem for you, have fun.
